Late summer casts Iceland in a remarkable light, when wildlife is still active, greenery lingers and daylight stretches long enough to explore without rushing. Many of the country’s most iconic experiences are within easy reach: Akureyri is your gateway to Húsavík, the ‘whale capital of Europe’, where humpbacks gather in the rich waters of Skjálfandi Bay, while Reykjavík opens the door to the Golden Circle, with its trio of wonders – Gullfoss Waterfall, Þingvellir National Park and the Geysir geothermal area. Throughout your journey, you’ll have chances to encounter black-sand beaches, puffins perched on soaring cliffs, volcanic craters and waterfalls such as the cascading Dynjandi and thundering Goðafoss.
