Innsbruck: Surrounded by mountains, this medieval city has seven markets offering everything from food and drink to locally-made wooden toys and must-have hand-blown glass ornaments for your tree. Explore lanes such as Kiebachgasse; look up to see Rapunzel and Snow White in the windows. As dusk falls, listen to carols, played by trumpeters high on the balcony of the 500-year-old Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof). Munch yummy Advent Kiachln, hot doughnuts with cranberry sauce. Then take the 8-minute ride on the funicular to Hungerburg market, halfway up Nordkette mountain; stop for more hot drinks and treats before heading for the summit of the 7,400ft Hafelekar for fab views of snow-tipped peaks and twinkling lights below.
