EU Entry/Exit System (EES) for British (and other non-EU / non-Schengen) travellers from 12 October 2025

What is EES & why is it being introduced

  • EES is a digital border control system that replaces manual passport stamping for non-EU / non-Schengen visitors arriving in the Schengen area. GOV.UK
  • The aim is to strengthen border security, help detect overstaying, and automate checks. GOV.UK
  • It complements a future system, ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), which is expected to begin operations in 2026. GOV.UK+1

When & where it applies

  • From 12 October 2025, EES will be in force. GOV.UK
  • It applies to travellers entering the Schengen area (i.e. most EU countries plus non-EU Schengen states). GOV.UK
  • The Republic of Ireland and Cyprus are not in Schengen, so EES does not apply when travelling to those countries. GOV.UK
  • On first arrival under EES, you must register biometric data (fingerprints + photo) at dedicated border booths. GOV.UK
  • The system replaces passport stamping; your digital EES record will be valid for 3 yearsGOV.UK

What travellers need to do / expect

  • You do not need to pre-register for EES before travelling. GOV.UK
  • On arrival (airport, land border, sea), you’ll undergo biometric registration. The process may take a few extra minutes, so expect possible delays at busy border crossings. GOV.UK
  • If entering via Port of Dover, Eurotunnel (Folkestone), or from St Pancras (Eurostar), the EES checks may be done before you depart the UK. GOV.UK
  • Upon exit from the Schengen area, you may again have to provide biometric data (fingerprint/photo) to log your exit. GOV.UK
  • The 90 days in any 180-day rule for short stays still applies. If you exceed this, you may face penalties or enforcement in individual Member States. GOV.UK

Exemptions & special cases

  • Some UK nationals are exempt from EES; they should present their exempting documentation to border authorities instead of being registered. GOV.UK
  • Cruise travel has specific rules:
    • If a cruise starts and ends outside Schengen, day trips into Schengen may be exempt. GOV.UK
    • If disembarking in Schengen and continuing travel by other means, EES checks will apply. GOV.UK

ETIAS: what’s next

  • Once ETIAS is launched (expected in 2026), UK passport holders will need to apply for authorisation before travelling to the Schengen area. GOV.UK
  • That will involve providing personal info, trip details, and paying a €20 fee.
