Are you taking too many packs of playing cards to Thailand? … and other (even) less known travel restrictions. Beware!
If you were wondering what number is “too many” playing cards – it’s 121. Due to strict Thai gambling laws, it’s highly recommended that you take heed, or you could face a fine or even jail. It’s always worth checking with the official source of travel advice about obvious or quirky rules for every destination. Here’s a link to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
Did you know there are other weird and wonderful facts too? (Probably best to acquaint yourself with the local laws in your destination before you set off with chewing gum or without your clothing!) For more odd sounding travel rules click here!
It’s also illegal to:
- chew gum in Singapore – After some oiks used chewing gum to vandalise train doors and $150,000 a year was spent to clean gum litter, Singapore banned all gum substances in 1992.
- hike without clothes in Switzerland – Only a decade ago, after Swiss and German travellers decided to make naked hiking a thing in Switzerland, Swiss officials reminded folks that a public indecency law still exists and you can be fined if caught.
- build a sandcastle in Spain – fines vary by location. On the island of Majorca, you could pay €100, or up to €1,500 in Galicia.
- Also… don’t feed pigeons in Venice (Italy) or pass wind in Malawi… or suffer the consequences.
